A Travellers Guide for Egypt Tours

Egypt Tours are a Holiday of a Lifetime
When You Choose an Egypt Tour Specialist

Egypt Tours are Memorable

Egypt tours are exotic and create memories that last well beyond your holiday in Egypt.  Egypt is a country that is on the bucket list for places to visit for many people all over the world. Millions of people do Egypt tours every year.  Some people have a connection to the pyramids, the sphinx, the temples (and let’s not forget the Mummies) that has been with them since childhood.

Others who do Egypt Tours hear the spiritual calling of Ancient Egypt and are drawn back to reconnect with their spiritual roots. Egypt holds mystique for all. For the lucky people that flock to Egypt every year, many discover that there is so much more to Egypt than what they see in the travel brochures.

The Energy of Egypt Creates a Tidal Wave of Experiences on our Egypt Tours

Egypt is a country where you not only explore the sites, but because of the way the ancients built the temples, tombs and pyramids, you truly “experience” the energy of Egypt.  For many who visit, something occurs within them – something that can be very subtle or a tidal wave of experience that envelops them and changes their thinking forever. The best part of Egypt you discover on your Egypt tours is her people and their generosity of spirit.

Is it Safe to Travel to Egypt and do an Egypt Tour?

The question I have been asked the most in this past year is of course “Is it safe to travel to Egypt?” The answer is a resounding Yes! What’s more, apart from early 2011 during the first revolution and mid 2013 during the second revolution, travelling through Egypt has been completely safe so long as you travelled with a reputable company.

Many media outlets have been guilty of sensationalising the news that comes out of Egypt. The reality is that the revolutions, though devastating with the loss of so many young lives, on the whole, have had a positive outcome for Egypt.  When you visit Egypt now, despite the financial and economic hardship the people are experiencing, you feel the optimism and hope in the people  There is evidence everywhere that progress being made. There has been a lot of new infrastructure constructed in the last 18 months.

Now all the Egyptians need is for the tourists to return to Egypt on Egypt tours so that they can truly get on with their lives.  There is a huge sector that relies on solely tourism for their survival.

Explore Dusty, Noisy, Chaotic Cairo on Egypt Tours

Egypt Tour Cairo by the light of the full Moon

Most Egypt tours begin in Cairo which is a very large city of 83 square miles (and expanding rapidly) with 21 million inhabitants. It is actually made up of several satellite cities. It is not a picturesque city for tourists but instead it is noisy, dusty, crowded and very chaotic but with a magic and charm that has been handed down through the millennia. But it is also a modern city with a reasonably good road system and many beautiful buildings even if they are covered in dust from the surrounding desert.

Be Amazed By the Pyramids and Sphinx and the Treasures of Tutankhamun in the Cairo Museum on Egypt Tours

Holidays Egypt night image tut maskMost people head straight to Giza to see the pyramids and the mighty Sphinx on their Egypt Tours. Most Egypt tours include the famous Cairo Museum, the home of Tutankhamun’s treasures, which is located near Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo.

They are building a huge modern museum in Giza and it is shaping up to be very beautiful. It should be completed in 2018-2019. But I’m rather fond of the chaotic energy that has been created in the current Museum.  Artefacts that were never intended to stand together are doing so and this creates the amazing atmosphere that you feel in this Museum.

Egypt’s population is approx. 94% Muslim and 6% Coptic Christian. There are some marvellous mosques and exquisite Coptic churches in Cairo that are worth seeing. Certainly you should not leave Cairo without doing a tour of Old Cairo but you will need a local guide, because it isn’t hard to get lost in these areas and not a lot of English is spoken.

Shop Till You Drop in the Many Markets on Our Egypt Tours

The markets such as the Khan El-Khalili bazaar in downtown Cairo are interesting experiences and a must see on any Egypt tour. You can shop for spices, perfumes, jewellery, brass, copperware, ceramics, fabrics including Egyptian cotton and many more souvenir items including replicas of ancient Egyptian treasures. Be prepared to shop around and bargain though. Prices for the same items can vary greatly at different shops.

Egypt Tours Shopping in Khan il Khalili Markets Cairo

Shopping in Khan il Khalili Markets Cairo

Many shop owners are welcoming to customers and will often offer a soft drink or a cup of tea. But Egyptians are hard sellers and will put on the pressure to buy, so don’t be intimidated, because they respect someone who matches them at the bargaining table.

So be warned, that the Egyptian markets are not relaxed places to shop, but they can be a lot of fun. The main thing is not to get upset by their hard sell tactics. It is just part of the adventure of shopping in a foreign land such as Egypt and just like back home, these traders are simply trying to make some money to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads.

Cairo is Being Revamped and is a City That Never Sleeps!

Egypt Tour Al-Muizz Street Islamic Cairo

Parts of downtown Cairo are undergoing a huge facelift with many very old buildings being restored. Downtown is a buzz with many fabulous restaurants, outdoor cafes and cultural centres where you can experience the music and dancing of Egypt and mingle with the local people. At night thousands of lights turn this dusty city into a sparkling jewel and like New York, the city never seems to sleep.

Day Trips to the Sphinx and Pyramids as Part of a Cruise – Egypt Tours if You Only Want a Quick Glimpse of Egypt

Many people visit Egypt for just one day as part of a Mediterranean Cruise. If you just want to tick the pyramids and sphinx off your bucket list, these types of Egypt tours are fine. But if you want to experience Egypt, I would suggest you take longer Egypt tours.

The cruise boats dock and you travel with the crowds by bus for around 3 hours. On arrival, you have a quick visit to the Giza Plateau and Sphinx, take a few pics, then travel all the way back to your cruise boat. I have spoken to so many people who have done these Egypt tours who were so disappointed that they didn’t have more time to visit these world heritage sites.

Ideal Length For an Egypt Tour

The minimum time to visit Egypt is ideally 10 days if you want to see the pyramids, the sphinx, museum and take a 3 -4 day Nile River cruise to see the temples and tombs, but it is very rushed. If you want to see the majestic temples at Abu Simbel and explore the lesser known sites that are in and around Luxor, you really need 12 – 14 days.

What to See and Do On An Egypt Tour

Most Egypt tour itineraries include seeing the pyramids and the mighty Sphinx and maybe a Nile Cruise visiting the temples and tombs in the South of Egypt and along the Nile River. But there is so much more to see and do in Egypt.

If you go with a tour company with the right connections in Egypt, you can really get to know the real Egypt and her people beyond the tourist sites. You need to plan your Egypt tours well and in advance. You are strongly advised to go with a tour company that specialises in Egypt travel to truly get the most out of your holiday of a lifetime.

Egypt Tour Temple of Horus EdfuThere are Egypt tours to suit all budgets and interests. Perhaps a 5-star luxury tour visiting sites from one end of Egypt to the other with an extended Nile cruises on a privately owned luxurious dhahabaya that is your own small floating luxury hotel complete with chef and staff to take care of you, appeals to your senses.

Maybe you want to visit a remote oasis in the desert or go diving and snorkelling on the beautiful coral reefs in the Red Sea or laze by the pool doing nothing at a luxurious Red Sea Resort.

Perhaps you want to ride a camel or feel the wind in your hair riding an Arabian Stallion through the desert.

Possibly you would like to Sail the Nile River on a cruise boat from Cairo all the way to Aswan. The choice is endless.

For the more adventurous, there are tour companies that specialise in backpacking through Egypt where you stay in 1-3 star hotels or camp out in the desert or in remote oases. You can sail the Nile from Luxor to Aswan on a felucca but you need to be very adventurous for this because there aren’t too many creature comforts aboard.

Best Time of Year to do Egypt Tours

The best time to do Egypt Tours is between October and May when the weather is cooler. Dress for comfort and for ladies, while it is not required, I suggest you dress conservatively and cover your arms and legs particularly in Cairo.

Currency and Banking Matters to be Considered During Your Egypt Tours

Currency is the Egyptian Pound and exchange rates are actually better in Egypt than here in Australia. I advise my tour guests to travel with US dollars as the exchange rate is a lot better in Egypt.  Most hotels have banks onsite where you can easily exchange money.   Travel cards and cash cards are becoming more readily accepted in Egypt as well.

Staying in Touch While on Your Egypt Tours

Mobile phone and internet coverage is good but I would suggest obtaining a local data sim card on arrival. Your tour guide can usually assist you with obtaining one.

The Valley of the Kings & the Tombs of the Pharaohs

The Valley of the Kings and the Tombs of the Pharaohs – A Must See Adventure on all Tours of Egypt

Valley of the Kings Tuthmosis III tomb

Discover the Tombs in the Valley of the Kings

Most Egypt holidays include a trip to the Valley of the Kings to check out the tombs of the Pharaohs and the iconic unary temples found nearby.  The Valley of the Kings is located on the West Bank of the Nile River near Luxor in Egypt. During the greatest period of ancient Egyptian history almost every pharaoh was buried here in tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The tombs in the Valley of the Kings have been dug deep into the rock and sandstone and have been decorated with extraordinary brightly coloured images painted by craftsmen with only a dim oil lamp to light their way.

The Valley of the Kings is a hot dry desolate place to visit so if possible it is best to get there either when it first opens of an hour or so before it closes.   It is now sometimes open for visitors to visit at night which makes for an awesome experience.  There is a visitors centre with lots of market shops full of over zealous vendors desperate to take your money for their goods. This has become a bit of a problem for tourists since the People’s Revolution in January 2011 due to the drop in numbers of tourists visiting Egypt. The vendors have become more aggressive with their selling style but they do understand the word NO (eventually and particularly if you avoid making eye contact with any of them) and you just have to say NO and keep walking and they will eventually give up and leave you alone. Do not feel threatened by this in any way because they are just trying to make a buck to feed their family.   If it becomes an issue for you just ask assistance from your Tour Guide who will move them on for you. There have been 63 tombs discovered in the Valley of the Kings to date and there may still be more to come, making this the richest archaeological site on earth. The numbers assigned to the tombs in the Valley of the Kings represent the order in which they were discovered.  However it is more logical to list the tombs in the order that they were actually built.

Valley of the Kings Tombs

Top 10 Tombs in the Valley of the Kings

1. Tomb of Tuthmosis III (No.34)

2. Tomb of Amenhotep II (No.35)

3. Tomb of Tutankhamun (No.62)

4. Tomb of Horemheb (No.57)

5. Tomb of Ramses I (No.16)

6. Tomb of Seti I (No.17)

7. Tomb of Merneptah (No.8)

8. Tomb of Ramses III (No.11)

9. Tomb of Ramses IV (No.2)

10. Tomb of Ramses VI (No.9)

Tuthmosis III (No.34)

Tuthmosis III was one of the first pharaohs to be buried in the Valley of the Kings. His tomb is at the furthest end, burrowed high into the mountainside in an attempt to outwit tomb robbers. The tomb paintings from this period are very crude, with figures represented almost as stick people.

Amenhotep II (No.35)

This is one of the deepest tombs in the Valley of the Kings, with 90 steps leading down to the various chambers. Amenhotep II ruled immediately after Tuthmosis III and this tomb has similarly basic wall paintings, as well as containing Amenhotep’s sarcophagus.

Tutankhamun (No.62)

This is a very small tomb, but it is one of the most visited thanks to the story of its discovery by Howard Carter. All of the treasures have been removed and visitors must be content with seeing the king’s mummy, which lies inside a gilded coffin.   It is often closed to the public due to ongoing investigation of the tomb and of the Mummy.    The tomb has hit the headlines recently with the possible find of two additional hidden chambers in the tomb.   It is also suggested that Tutankhamun may be sharing his tomb with the very famous Queen Nefertiti.  Her tomb has never been discovered.   It is also suggested that many of the artefacts found in Tutankhamun’s tomb actually belonged to his father Arkhenaten.  Arkhenaten was a pharaoh of Egypt during the 18th dynasty who ruled as Amenhotep IV but when he died all records of his reign were erased from the records.  It is thought that due to Tutankhamun’s sudden demise all the family possessions were put into the tomb with Tutankhamun.

Horemheb (No.57)

This tomb saw the introduction of using bas-reliefs in tombs in which figures are carved out on the wall before being painted.  This was a process introduced in temples as well.   Not all figures are finished and it is fascinating to see the work in various stages of completion.

Ramses I (No.16)

Ramses I ruled only for a single year and his tomb is correspondingly modest in size. It has the shortest entrance corridor in the valley leading to a small burial chamber. However, the colours of the tomb paintings remain particularly vibrant.

Seti I (No.17)

If you visit only one tomb when you visit the Valley of the Kings, it should be this one – the longest, deepest and most lavishly decorated tomb in the Valley of the Kings. You will need to purchase an extra ticket for this beautiful tomb but it is well worth it.  The vaulted burial chamber boasts a beautiful ceiling, showing the constellations surrounded by a line-up of deities.  The vibrant blues and yellows in this tomb really do take your breath away.

Merneptah (No.8)

One of the many sons of Ramses II, Merneptah’s tomb almost equals that of Seti I for grandeur. This is the first tomb in which the axis is completely straight, ending in a tomb chamber containing the pharaoh’s magnificent granite sarcophagus.

Ramses III (No.11)

This is also known as the “Tomb of the Harpists” after the bas-relief of two musicians. Unusually for a royal tomb, its colourful reliefs include scenes of everyday Egyptian life.   This gives us a wonderful insight into how the ancient Egyptians lived and the type of activities they were involved in.

Ramses IV (No.2)

Ramses III was the last of the great pharaohs. The quality of the craftsmanship in the tomb of his successor is noticeably poorer than those that came before but it is still worth a visit.

Ramses VI (No.9)

This tomb has the most amazing paintings with magnificent vivid colours, representing sacred texts and imagery, central to which is the voyage of the sun god Ra through the underworld and his victorious re-emergence in the morning.   This truly is a spectacular tomb to visit.

The Valley of the Kings is a must see place to visit and it is best done with a knowedgeable egyptologist. Here at Holidays Egypt we only work with the best there is and we have the most amazing visits to the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Why not come with us on our next tour of Egypt.

Secrets of the Egyptian Afterlife

Egypt Tours Tutankhamun Sarcohagus

The Journey the Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs Made Through the After Life

The Egyptian afterlife was a key part of the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians.  Preparation for the journey of the pharaoh into the afterlife was important and much was done to prepare the deceased for the journey through the underworld.  Following the pharaoh’s death, the body was embalmed with special oils and wrapped in precious linen.  Embalming rituals for the deceased pharaoh’s body took place over about 72 days.  The body was carefully preserved and protected with amulets so that it was available to the pharaoh in the afterlife.

Tombs for the pharaohs were very elaborate with highly decorative coloured paintings on the walls.  Most of the tombs for later pharaohs of Ancient Egypt are located in either the Valley of the Kings or the Valley of the Queens on the west bank of the Nile River near Luxor.  Many earlier pharaohs were buried in the tombs near Abydos and many of these tombs have been recently discovered.  Pharaohs began building on their tombs as soon as they came to the throne.  It was important that everything was ready for their journey into the afterlife.

Many pharaohs and people of noble birth were also buried in pyramids and in mustabas. The walls of these tombs and mustabas are highly decorated with images that tell us about the beliefs that the ancient Egyptians had in regard to the afterlife. However, not all stories are the same and it is clear that their beliefs changed over the dynasties of the Pharaohs.

The History of the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt

The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt

The Gods & Goddesses of Ancient Egypt played a massive role in the lives on the people of Ancient Egypt.  They believed strongly in the power of the Gods and Goddesses.   Belief in this system and the power of the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt was so strong.

Throughout history, various pharaohs stopped at nothing to ensure that the people believed they had received the divine right to rule from the gods themselves.

Role of the Gods and Goddesses of Egypt

Egypt Tours Egyptian Gods and Goddesses Ra on throneThe ancient Egyptians are believed to have had as many as two thousand Gods and Goddesses. Key gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt were Ra, Isis, Osiris, Sekhmet, Hathor, Horus, Sobek, Nephrys, Wadjet, Bes, Anubis, Set, Bastet, Khepri, Thoth, Maat, Net, Geb, Ptah, Khnum to name a few.  Roles for these Gods and Goddesses were varied.

Each of them has a myth or legend surrounding how they came to be so important.  Sekhmet, for example, was the goddess of war and protection.  Statues of Sekhmet were carried into battle by the Pharaoh.   Many temples has statues of Sekhmet to protect them.

Maat was the goddess of balance and law and represented the energy of ancient Egypt.  Everything had to be in balance in accordance with the energy of Maat for life to be considered in Ancient Egypt.  During the weighing of the heart ceremony the heart of the deceased Pharaoh is weighed against the feather of Maat.  If the heart is heavier than the feather of Maat, it is thrown to be eaten by the Jackal and the Pharaoh cannot continue into the afterlife.  Anubis protected the Pharaoh on his journey through the afterlife.

The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt Represented the Mythology of Nature, the Earth, Sky, Moon, Sun, Stars and the Nile River

The Ancient Egyptians strived to understand their place in the universe and their mythology centres itself on nature, the earth, sky, moon, sun, stars, and the Nile River. This is where the cosmic creation of Egyptian myth began. Ancient Egyptian mythology states that in the beginning of time everything began with Nu.

Unlike other ancient cultures, whose gods looked somewhat like people, Egyptian gods had animal heads with many of them having human bodies.

Ra was the most important of the gods. The Ancient Egyptians believed that Ra was the creator of the world and of life. Ra represented the Sun and was therefore known as the god of light.  He was often referred to as the Great Cat.  In Ancient Egypt, family members shaved their eyebrows in mourning when the family cat died. In those days killing a cat was a crime punishable by death. The cat was considered sacred and worshiped by mummifying them before burial. In one ancient city in Egypt, more than 300,000 cat mummies were found.

Secrets From the Tombs in the Valley of the Kings

Secrets of The Valley of the Kings

Egypt Tours Pharaohs Tombs Anubis Weighing of the Heart Ceremony

Go Beneath the Surface and Learn the Secrets of the Burial Rites of Ancient Egyptians

The Valley of the Kings is located hidden within the barren hills on the west bank of the Nile River near ancient Thebes which is the modern city of Luxor today. Within these hills lies a honeycomb of hidden tunnels leading to the tombs of the Pharaohs.

The most famous of these tombs was of course that of the boy king Tutankhamun because of the riches that Howard Carter found still inside when he opened the tomb in the 1920s. But although this is a famous tomb it is perhaps the smallest and most insignificant of all the tombs in the Valley of the Kings.  It lay hidden under the rubble of another tomb.   Nearly a 100 years since it was rediscovered it is still shrouded in mystery.  Recently scans were carried out which suggested that there were other chambers behind one of its painted walls.   Speculation in 2017 is rife that these chambers may be the tomb of his mother Nefertiti.

It is believed that the first Pharaoh to use the Valley of the Kings was the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut and her tomb is buried deep within the barren hills. Her memorial temple lies within the Valley and is on every tourist map for tours of Egypt. It is still being excavated and is a magical site to visit as the Sun is rising over the Valley of the Kings.

But as with all things Egyptian, the Valley of the Kings is steeped in mystery. Most of the treasure has been plundered since by tomb robbers back in antiquity but the paintings on the walls of the tombs have survived to tell the story of the Pharaohs.

Check out this fabulous documentary about the Valley of the Kings.  Go beneath the surface and learn its secrets.  Learn about the process for mummifying the Pharaoh’s body to prepare him or her for their journey through the afterlife.  Learn about the pyramid texts and the paintings on the walls.

Egypt Tours Ramses the Great Abu Simbel at Night

Ramses had to prove himself as worthy so went to war to prove his might to the world.   His army was hastily conscripted from all corners of the kingdom.   His most famous conquest was at the Battle of Kadesh when he was 20 years of age. Stories of this victory are recorded on the walls of several temples. But there is no proof that he actually achieved all that he reported to be true but his battle success stories were effective in achieving his goals.

He is one of the longest ruling pharaohs and ruled for 67 years.  Ramses the Great had many wives and concubines and had over 100 children.   Ramses 11 was a very powerful pharaoh who expanded the borders of Egypt and protected every part of Egypt.

Of all the wives of Ramses the Great, his great love was the very beautiful Nefertari.  She was his queen and greatest confidente.  So great was his love for her, that he honoured her with her own beautiful temple next to his own at Abu Simbel.

Ramses the Great and the Buildings He Created

Of all the Pharaohs, Ramses 11 known as Ramses the Great was the builder of the most buildings.   For Ramses the Great, creating buildings was the best way to show the strength of his power.  He significantly expanded Karnak Temple, built Luxor Temple and the Ramasseum Funerary Temple.  There is a wonderful wall in Abydos Temple where Ramses as a young boy is being taught about the pharaohs of Egypt by his father Seti I.

But the most famous and iconic of his buildings is Abu Simbel located deep in the south of Egypt.  This temple was built as a statement for those entering Egypt from the South and was designed to leave visitors in no doubt as to who ruled Egypt and the strength of his power.

The Greatest Mystery That Surrounds the Pyramids of Egypt

From the work of Egyptologist Mark Lehner, we know that ordinary every people who lived in Ancient Egypt built the pyramids.  But who designed them, how were they built, when were they built and the biggest mystery of all – what was their purpose.   Why were the pyramids of Egypt built in the pyramid shape? Archaeologists have found copper tools and toothless saws near the pyramids. How were they able to cut the limestone to create the giant blocks?  But we still do not know how or why the pyramids of Egypt were built.   Perhaps this is a mystery that we will never know for sure.  The following documentary discuses many of these questions and provides many plausible possibilities.

Through the work of engineer Robert Bauval, we now know that the pyramids have been built to true north and are in alignment with the belt of the Orion star system.

The Early Pyramids of Egypt

The Ancient Egyptians built fabulous temples and tombs and these temples and tombs are located right throughout Egypt. It is considered that the earliest of these pyramids is located at Sakkara.  The Steppe pyramid began as a mustaba and expanded upwards to create a pyramid shape.   Another early attempt is located at Dashur. It was built in the reign of Snefu.  The Bent Pyramid is an example of miscalculation of angles on behalf of the designer.   Also located at Dashur is the Red Pyramid that was also built during th reign of Snefu.  Both these pyamids are still standing today.
